Hotspot capability on the phone and permission in the mobile plan are different requirements. A working mobile connection does not guarantee that a laptop can use it on the same terms.
1. Read the sharing conditions first
Look for tethering or hotspot support in the plan terms. If it is allowed, check whether there is a separate allowance, reduced speed or extra charge for shared data.
An “unlimited” label is not enough to establish what a connected laptop can use. If meetings or essential work depend on the connection, ask the seller about unclear conditions before paying.
2. Confirm the phone’s data line
Check that the phone itself can use the travel line, then enable sharing using the device’s official instructions. Set a password and limit access to the people who need it.
If the sharing menu is unavailable, check carrier and plan support as well as the operating system. Separate a hotspot problem from a problem with the underlying mobile connection.
3. Review the connected computer
OS updates, cloud syncing and photo backups can consume data unexpectedly. Complete necessary updates before departure and review automatic downloads while traveling.
Meeting usage changes with video quality and screen sharing. Include the computer’s activities in your estimate rather than using only the phone’s usual daily consumption.
4. Plan a backup for essential work
Location and congestion affect the connection. Test required applications at your accommodation before an important meeting, and arrange power for the phone.
Company VPN or device-management restrictions are separate from plan support. Follow workplace rules and arrange an alternative connection if the work requires it.
