There is no single roaming setting that is right for every travel plan. Decide what each line will do, then follow the conditions for that line rather than changing every SIM together.
1. Decide what each line is for
For example, use the travel line for data and keep your usual number for essential calls or messages. Clear line labels help you avoid changing the wrong settings.
Whether to keep the home line active depends on your need for that number and the carrier’s overseas terms. Turning off data roaming does not necessarily prevent voice charges or every other type of charge.
2. Follow the travel seller’s instructions
Select the travel eSIM for mobile data, then check whether its provider requires data roaming. Requirements depend on how the plan is supplied.
On a dual-SIM iPhone, select the relevant line before changing its settings. On Android, also confirm which SIM you are editing. Use your device manufacturer’s instructions if menu names differ.
3. Review the home line and switching
If the home line remains active, check its overseas data, call and messaging conditions. Review automatic data switching so your phone does not unexpectedly use another line.
A managed work phone may restrict settings. Discuss this with the administrator before departure and agree on a way to stay reachable.
4. Check on arrival and after returning
On arrival, check the selected data line, connection indicator and allowance. If data does not work, check the plan before switching to the home line.
After the trip, confirm that your usual data line is selected again. Even if the phone supports automatic switching, check the result. Decide whether to remove the travel profile after considering reuse and support needs.
